How we estimate power return: folding panels in direct high-altitude sun usually deliver about 75% of their label, so a 200 W panel gives roughly 150 W. A clear Front Range day gives about 5 peak sun hours. Device math assumes a MacBook Air full charge costs about 60 Wh from a station, a phone about 15 Wh, a typical fridge about 60 W on average, Starlink Standard about 75 W, Starlink Mini about 30 W and a CPAP without humidifier about 300 Wh a night. Usable station capacity is about 85% of the label after inverter losses. Your balcony angle, shade and season change everything, so run your address in PVWatts.

Colorado Balcony & Gear Solar Sizer
Size it to
your balcony.
Pick your city, the way your balcony faces and what you want to run. The sizer uses NREL PVWatts sun data for that city and Xcel Energy Colorado rates to show what each of the 8 kits can do for you.

Formula: Wh a day = PVWatts DC kWh per kW a year × panel watts ÷ 365, NREL PVWatts v8 TMY sun data for each city, panel tilted 60°, 14% system losses. Usable energy is 85% of harvest or battery for AC loads and 90% for DC loads. Value = yearly kWh × Xcel Energy Colorado base time-of-use rates effective Nov 1, 2025, $0.0716 off-peak to $0.1931 on-peak per kWh (seasonal averages, riders and taxes excluded; Colorado Springs and Fort Collins have city utilities, so Xcel is shown for reference). Loads: Work-From-Home Desk (Laptop + Wi-Fi): laptop 30 W plus Wi-Fi router 12 W for 8 hours; Apartment Fridge Backup: fridge about 1,100 Wh a day, check its yellow EnergyGuide label; CPAP + Phones Overnight: CPAP 40 W for 8 hours without humidifier plus two phone charges; Camping / Tailgate: 12 V cooler averaging 20 W over 24 hours plus phones and lights 60 Wh. Estimates, not guarantees. Sources: PVWatts, Colorado PUC TOU rates.

Rate of power return
One sunny hour.
Two laptop charges.
A 200 W folding panel returns about 150 W in direct Colorado sun. That is roughly 2.5 MacBook Air charges, or 10 phone charges, for every hour the panel faces the sun.
Countdown
The HOA clock is running.
On and after January 1, 2027, unreasonable covenants that ban qualifying portable-scale devices are void as a matter of public policy.
Until January 1, 2027 (America/Denver), when unreasonable HOA bans become void.
The honest line on Colorado law
Two kinds of balcony solar.
Portable kits charge a battery you own. Grid-tied kits feed your home wiring. Colorado treats them differently.
Portable kits on this page
A power station plus a folding panel is a self-contained battery. It charges from the sun, then you plug devices into it. Nothing connects to your home wiring or your meter, so there is no installer, no utility paperwork and no backfeed. It works on any balcony or patio today.
- Zero install, take it when you move
- Outage backup for laptops, phones, Wi-Fi, CPAP and a fridge
- Does not lower your bill through the meter
Grid-tied plug-in solar under HB26-1007
A grid-tied kit pushes power through a wall outlet into the home circuit to offset the meter. Colorado's statute covers portable-scale devices up to 1,920 W that are listed by a recognized test lab, with UL 1741 style anti-islanding so they shut off when the grid is down. None of the Amazon kits above are grid-tied microinverter kits.
- Needs a listed microinverter with anti-islanding
- Never plug a power station output back into a wall outlet
- Read the statute before you buy a grid-tied kit
Why Colorado
High. Dry. Ready for a small array.
Denver markets itself as the Mile High City. The National Laboratory of the Rockies in Golden uses that campus as a PVWatts example. Run your address in PVWatts for a real estimate. We do not invent city kWh tables.
